TRAVEL & DIRECTIONS
Since most of our guests will be paying us the greatest honour of travelling from the United States,
we have carefully put together up-to-date guidance on entry requirements for the UK, our recommended airports, and practical instructions for travelling from your chosen airport to York by train
(the fastest and most convenient option).
We hope this guide can help make your travel planning easier.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Passports, Visas and ETA
-
Passport: You must travel with a valid passport for the whole of your stay. Check your passport expiry well before travel. Official guidance on visitor entry requirements is on GOV.UK.
-
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): From January 2025 the UK introduced an ETA requirement for most visa-exempt nationalities (including US citizens). US travellers should check whether they need an ETA before booking flights — applying early is recommended. Official UK guidance and recent summaries explain the ETA process and fee.
Suggested actions for US guests:
-
Visit the GOV.UK website to check whether you need a visa or ETA.
-
If an ETA is required, apply well before travel (the ETA application is online). See the UK government pages and official ETA guidance.

RECOMMENDED AIRPORTS
We recommend these airports as the most convenient for travel to York:
-
London Heathrow (LHR): Large international hub with many US flights. Good onward rail links into central London and beyond.
-
We highly recommend using the Piccadilly line (Underground) from Terminal 2, 3, 4 or 5, directly to King's Cross station.
-
Alternatively, you can view the Travel by Train page and the Heathrow Express page for more options.
-
-
London Gatwick (LGW): Another major London airport with frequent rail services.
-
We recommend visiting the Train Travel page for more information.
-
-
Manchester Airport (MAN): A convenient northern hub with direct rail services to York. Typical journey time to York is around 1hr 50mins–2 hrs on direct services. This is usually the fastest airport option for travellers who can book a direct flight to Manchester.
-
We recommend visiting the Getting To and From York page for more information.

TRAINS TO YORK
Practical Guidance
-
We recommend booking rail tickets in advance via Trainline (easy international checkout, mobile tickets, and route planning). Trainline also explains how to buy UK train tickets and when to book. In many cases the cheapest fares go on sale up to 12 weeks before travel.
-
Typical routes (examples — check timetables for your travel date):
-
From Heathrow: usually via central London (Elizabeth line to a main London station then an intercity service to York). Journeys commonly involve 1–2 changes; fastest total times 2 hrs 50mins–3 hrs (some journeys are longer).
-
From Gatwick: frequent services run to London and onward to York; fastest options just under 3 hrs (may involve 1 change).
-
From Manchester Airport: direct trains to York are frequent and typically take about 1hr 50mins–2hrs. This is the simplest rail option with the fewest changes.
-
-
Luggage & accessibility: most long-distance trains accept standard luggage; stations have lifts and step-free routes at the major stations, but check specifics on station pages if mobility assistance is needed.
-
Booking tip: book your long-distance tickets (e.g. LNER, Avanti, TransPennine) in advance for the best fares. Use Trainline to compare operators and to buy digital tickets.

PRACTICAL TRAVEL TIPS
-
Arrive with time to spare: international flights and border checks (including any ETA checks) can add time on arrival. Plan connections with comfortable buffers.
-
Buy tickets in advance: UK advance fares are usually cheapest when purchased early (Trainline shows advance fares, seat reservations and mobile tickets).
-
Railcards: if you plan additional UK travel, railcards can save up to a third on fares (Trainline can advise).
-
Taxi / coach alternatives: if you prefer door-to-door, all three airports offer taxis and coach services — check each airport’s transport pages for operators and estimated times.
